Chapter Twenty-Five
They had been walking for hours, and Hazen had to remind herself that her legs were still attached to her body despite going numb a few miles back.
The good news, though, was that she wasnât cold anymore. A small film of sweat beaded her neck, rolling down her back. She was sure she smelled at this point, and she would give anything for a shower, a hot meal, and a bed that wasnât made of dirt, grass, or a pile of furs. Not that she was complaining about being alive; no, that she was very grateful for.
Lithônion and Savven had ventured further and further away from her, not on purpose but because she was slowing considerably. Her feet dragged through dead leaves and across black soil, barely having the energy to lift themselves enough to take a step.
Her heartbeat was a loud thump in her ears, and she took in a sharp breath when a stitch in her side stabbed suddenly. Hazenâs stopped, and her hands grasped her waist while she bent over, heaving in a slow, deep breath. The two males stopped when they heard her inhale.
âAre you okay?â Lithônion called, hearing him take a step in her direction.
âSheâs fine,â Savven commented, unimpressed. âJust human.â
Hazen looked up at that and glared at him. He quirked a brow in response.
âAm I wrong?â he drawled.
Nostrils flaring in irritation, she straightened. Taking a deep breath, her heartbeat no longer a relentless drum in her ears, she gave Savven a tight smile. âHow observant of you,â she quipped dryly. âWhat gave it away?â
Savven didnât patronise her with a response.
Hazen rolled her eyes when he continued walking and flipped him a vulgar gesture with her hand. Lithônion arched a brow at her raised finger.
âCourtesy of the human realm.â
He nodded, smiling slightly.
She waved her hands to usher him to continue when she began walking. âCome on, letâs get this over with.â
Hazen would have argued hours ago that she loved hiking back in the human world. She enjoyed nature, rain or sun. But not when she hadnât slept in a week and was being chased by a psychotic Fae. She was still convinced she was dreaming but wasnât about to voice that thought to the two males with her. If she was dreaming, her mind had a very, very good imagination.
âIf itâs any consideration, thereâs only a few miles left,â Lithônion said gently, waiting for her until they could walk together.
Hazen looked up at the sky, which could be seen through the thin, spindle tree branches. It was still a bright blue, but the sun had disappeared overhead. It was well into the afternoon already, that much she could say with certainty.
She gave him a tired smile and continued to trudge on.
